From Compliance to Prediction: How AI Is Redrawing Workplace Safety in 2026

The conversation at this year’s leading occupational-safety gatherings has shifted decisively. Artificial intelligence is no longer a fringe topic on the expo floor — it is the headline. Programmes at events such as ASSP Safety 2026 put AI, risk management and emerging workplace hazards at the centre, and analysts increasingly describe 2026 as the year safety moved “from compliance to prediction.”

Instead of documenting incidents after they happen, organisations are using AI to anticipate them: spotting hazards, flagging risky conditions and prioritising interventions before harm occurs. Surveys of safety leaders report strong appetite — a large majority believe AI can cut administrative burden, and most say they would trust AI-generated insights to help guide safety decisions.

Optimism, with a warning

That enthusiasm comes with a clear caveat: AI needs guardrails. Bodies including the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have published practical guidance on managing AI-related hazards, and the International Labour Organization has examined how AI and digitalisation are reshaping health and safety at work.

One risk is subtle but serious: “cognitive surrender” — the gradual erosion of human judgment when people defer too readily to the machine.

In safety-critical settings, an over-trusted algorithm can be as dangerous as no system at all.

Predictive safety needs qualified people

Predictive tools do not remove the safety professional from the equation; they raise the bar for what that professional needs to know. Interpreting AI outputs, understanding their limits, designing human oversight and integrating AI responsibly into an HSE programme are now core competencies.

The Certified AI Safety Professional (AISP®) credential is built for this new era — validating that practitioners can harness AI to improve safety outcomes without surrendering the human judgment that keeps workplaces safe.
